Our agency supports the Conscious Discipline philosophy. All staff follow the Conscious Discipline framework that includes:

  • Safety (Self-regulation)
  • Connection
  • Positive School Climate
  • Problem-solving
  • Mindfulness in Adults

Conscious Discipline is an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach. It is recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices(NREPP) and received high ratings in 8 of 10 categories in a Harvard analysis of the nation’s top 25 social-emotional learning programs. The Harvard study’s authors say, “Conscious Discipline provides an array of behavior management strategies and classroom structures that teachers can use to turn everyday situations into learning opportunities.”

Conscious Discipline encompasses these four components, which are scientifically and practically designed for success.

It’s the only program that utilizes everyday events as the curriculum, addresses the adult’s emotional intelligence as well as the child’s, and integrates classroom management with social-emotional learning. Conscious Discipline empowers adults to consciously respond to daily conflict, transforming it into an opportunity to teach critical life skills to children.

Conscious Discipline is not just for teachers. Learn how to increase connection, self-regulation, and positive behavior management in your home, resulting in a happier and healthier home environment.  We meet once a month during our School to Home meetings where we focus on a different skill from the Parent Education Curriculum through Conscious Discipline.

We also provide two opportunities throughout the school year for families to participate in a book club focusing on Conscious Discipline. Families can sign up and will receive a copy of the book for free which you will be able to keep.  This is another great opportunity for families to come together share experiences, get ideas from one another, and learn new skills.

School Year 2022/2023 we will focus on the books:  Easy to Love Difficult to Discipline and There’s Got to Be a Better Way both by Dr. Becky Bailey creator of Conscious Discipline.

If you are a Head Start or Early Head Start Family and would like to join the book club for 2022/2023 please send an email to:  Amanda Vankosky at avankosky@flowersearlylearning.org
