What is School Readiness?

The office of Head Start defines school readiness as

children possessing the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for success throughout their academic careers

The Education team studies child data 3 to 4 times a year. We use those results to write program action steps and plan training.

School Readiness Goals for Ages Birth to Five Years

Approaches to Learning

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Children birth to five will follow rules and routines; manage feelings, emotions and actions age-appropriately. Children will demonstrate increasing abilities to control impulses, show interest and initiative, sustain focus, express themselves in creativity and gain communication skills.

Social-Emotional

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Children birth to five will develop secure relationships with adults and other children. They will learn to express / manage their emotions and recognize emotions in others. Children will begin to demonstrate knowledge of self and a sense of belonging to various groups.

Language and Literacy

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Children birth to five will respond to and participate in communication with others. They will develop increasing awareness of rhyme and alliteration. Preschoolers will have increased skills in phonological awareness, name writing and knowledge about books. Dual Language Learners will show steady and consistent improvement in Receptive and Expressive English skills as well as increased engagement in English Language activities.

Family Engagement

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Families participate in school readiness of their child by assuring consistent daily attendance. Families are involved in the observations of their child and in leadership opportunities in which they give input into agency and community development.

Health and Wellness

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Families participate in school readiness of their child by assuring regular medical and dental visits. Children are kept up to date on all immunizations. Families participate in the Be Busy, Be Healthy program (as needed).

Cognition

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Infants and Toddlers will explore the environment around them in order to understand self and others. Children birth to five will develop age appropriate skills in mathematical thinking through experiences in their environment and play. Preschoolers will use scientific inquiry skills to ask questions, gather information and conduct investigations.

Perceptual, Motor and Physical Development

TCHS School Readiness Goal: Children birth to five will demonstrate age-appropriate skills in motor abilities and develop healthy behaviors as it pertains to self-care tasks, healthy eating habits, personal safety, and daily routines.
